PAGE NINE -- No. 50
by Alan Korwin, Author
Gun Laws of America

I've created a special feature for the print media and broadcasters ("Page Nine" regardless of where or when it runs), that covers stories afresh, not the way news rooms typically flavor things. It would help reduce the distrust so many news consumers feel and could be the most avidly followed item you carry -- if you carry it. It certainly is well received by my audience.

This casual sample might make you say, "We'll NEVER run that!" but Page Nine is being built around ad revenues from clear-thinking mainstream businesses.

1- Are Handguns Machineguns?

The lamestream media told you:

Dick Heller, the security guard who won back limited gun rights in an historic decision at the Supreme Court last month, was turned down by D.C. police when he tried to register his semiautomatic handgun. District authorities decided it was not a proper handgun under the new law.

The Uninvited Ombudsman notes however that:

Defying all logic and reason, D.C.'s new law repeats language from its old law, that says any firearm that could take a magazine with more than 12 rounds -- whether you own such a magazine or not -- is a machine gun. Blatant lunacy, D.C. bureaucrats are trying to get away with this abuse, to ban anything but revolvers and derringers.

Dick Heller, who successfully registered the 9-shot, 6-inch barrel, Harrington & Richardson "Longhorn" .22-caliber revolver that got his Supreme Court case underway, is using the denial for his semi-auto to challenge the city's unmitigated gall on the "bottom loading" issue. He also plans to challenge the continued requirement that his gun remains in his home unloaded, and locked or disassembled, rendering it useless, until a break-in or other life threatening self-defense situation occurs.

Two of the finest Second Amendment attorneys in the nation, Stephen Halbrook and Richard Gardiner, are representing Heller in the ongoing case. The city plans to spend buckets of taxpayer money to prevent Mr. Heller from exercising the rights most other Americans have, and which the Supreme Court insisted must be restored to him.

No criminal charges or other indictments against District authorities have been announced.

----------

2- Boring Earthquake Glorified

The lamestream media told you:

Too much.

The Uninvited Ombudsman notes however that:

Los Angeles experienced a 5.4 magnitude earthquake, no major damage was apparent, no one was seriously hurt, the power didn't go out, traffic continued to flow, and every major news outlet stayed with the story for hours after the event had ended. With nothing significant to report, reporters took phone calls from people who felt the shaking.

The non-event preempted every other news story for hours, preventing news consumers eating lunch (like me) from getting any news about anything, on regular TV (C-SPAN aired the usual abuse from Congress uninterrupted). The breathless, monotonous hand wringing over nothing happening was abysmal, but just a step below the usual broadcasts.

----------

3- Olympics Firearms Teams

The lamestream media told you:

The Olympic Torch went through the capital of Tibet, Lhasa, with virtually none of the protests and demonstrations that marred the fine ritual in some other cities recently, on its way to the grand opening of the games.

The Uninvited Ombudsman notes however that:

Hundreds of Communist Chinese troops and police kept Lhasa virtually closed during the Olympic torch relay, to avoid the extreme embarrassment the Chinese dictatorship has suffered from protests for its treatment of Tibetans and human rights in general. Several hundred "pre-approved onlookers" lined the streets for cameras, according to The Week news magazine.

The U.S. Olympic shooting team, which had to get special permission from President Bush to bring firearms into the Communist stronghold for competing in the games, may receive some televised coverage from NBC and its satellite stations (MSNBC, CNBC, USA, OXYGEN, TELEMUNDO, more). For broadcast schedules (next-to-the-last link): http://usashooting.org/viewRelease.php?id=170

Complete game schedules, which begin on Aug. 8, 2008, straight from the commie website: http://en.beijing2008.cn/schedule/

----------

4- Religion of Pieces

The lamestream media told you:

Islam is the religion of peace.

The Uninvited Ombudsman notes however that:

In an AP story that got surprisingly little coverage nationally, nine Iranians are scheduled to be stoned to death for having sex. Eight women and one man convicted of adultery will be buried (women up to their necks, the man to his waist), and be stoned with pieces of rock too small to cause death immediately, which means the guilty parties will suffer, and plenty of pieces can be thrown by those carrying out the sentence.

According to AP, "Six of the nine were convicted based solely on judges' decisions with no witnesses or the presence of their lawyers during their confessions." One, reportedly, confessed without understanding what the charge was.

Stoning, very popular right after the 1979 Islamic revolution, is less frequent now, though the ruling mullahs don't issue press releases when sentences are carried out.

While some in Iran are seeking an end to the practice, "opposition from hard-line clerics has sidelined their efforts," according to the AP. http://tinyurl.com/6yd6pn

----------

5- Journalists Define Journalism

The lamestream media told you:

Nothing.

The Uninvited Ombudsman notes however that:

Journalists seeking immunity from federal demands for their sources, notes, documents and other information are close to enacting the Free Flow of Information Act, S. 2035 (http://tinyurl.com/5r2mec). This would help ensure that the identity of people granted confidentiality, for information that would not otherwise be revealed, remains secret.

A double-edged sword, this protects traitors who leak government security secrets to the press, as well as whistleblowers who reveal malfeasance at great personal risk to themselves.

The interesting part of the bill, which applies to "covered persons" is the definition of such people, namely, those who are "engaged in journalism." That term would finally get an official definition under the proposed bill. Are you a journalist, or am I, and hence protected from the feds? See what you think:

Sec. 8 (5) JOURNALISM- The term 'journalism' means the regular gathering, preparing, collecting, photographing, recording, writing, editing, reporting, or publishing of news or information that concerns local, national, or international events or other matters of public interest for dissemination to the public.

The term does not include designated terrorists. I think I am. Covered, that is. I hope I never have to find out.

----------

6- Cool Obama Deception

The lamestream media told you:

Barack Obama's highly publicized trip to the Middle East was for diplomatic purposes and was not a political maneuver, according to highly placed sources within his campaign for the presidency.

The Uninvited Ombudsman notes however that:

The "news" media, in a shocking display of partisanship, had the unmitigated brazen gall to promote, care of highly placed unnamed sources from the very person they're covering, that a completely political effort was not political in nature. This helps disguise the overtly biased support the media is providing to their favored candidate, they think. Although the announcement violated every tenet of journalism ethics, no reprimands or dismissals have been announced.

In other news, all three failing TV networks have sent their anchors along with Barack bin Obama on the trip. No such coverage was lavished on Obama's opponent, Sen. John McCain, on his many trips to the war zone and the Middle East. More than 200 reporters joined the junket, providing overwhelming evidence of the political nature of the junket, despite "news" reports denying the obvious. Ratings and circulation for the lamestream media continue to plummet, for reasons that were unclear to the media at press time.

The hypocrisy of the effort was not lost on T-shirt makers, who have cranked out hysterical Obama World Tour and ObamaMania rags with pictures of the network execs fawning at the African American's feet.

----------

7- Cooler Obama Deception

The lamestream media told you:

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama appeared before an audience of 200,000 people in Germany, showing his huge popularity in Europe, where people cannot even vote for him. It is the largest crowd the Illinois Senator has addressed so far.

The Uninvited Ombudsman notes however that:

In a move as slick as anything Slick Willie ever staged, B.H. Obama took to a stage after the free concert appearance of two popular German bands (Patrice and Reamonn) entertained a huge crowd of fans, estimated by Spiegel Online as "tens of thousands." Local U.S. "news" reports made it appear as if the black candidate had overwhelming support among German people, but the music fans had turned out for other reasons. http://tinyurl.com/5gfs9y

At least it was not a unique event. Obama had done the same thing in Portland, Oregon, with similar fawning deception from the lamestream media. At the risk of seeming more focused on one candidate than another, attention to diversity requires noting that both candidates are so far away from traditional American values its pathetic, even if one is worse than the other.

----------

8- Global Whining Blame

The lamestream media told you:

According to AP reporter Dina Cappiello, "Former vice president Al Gore called Thursday for a 'man on the moon' effort to switch all of the nation's electricity production to wind, solar and other carbon-free sources within 10 years, a goal that he said would solve global warming as well as economic and natural security crises caused by dependence on fossil fuels."

The Uninvited Ombudsman notes however that:

Appearing to have lost his sense of balance, Al Gore, speaking in front of eight American flags at a packed auditorium, said in a prepared speech that if the United States cuts its CO2 output, the entire global warming theory will come to an end and the problem will be solved. Many readers read the story without connecting those dots, just like the "news" editors that ran the self-evidently absurd statement.

"Surely Gore knows that the U.S. is only a tiny part of the world's land mass, population and energy use," said one expert who read about the speech. "The conclusion from his proposal is that the entire 'problem' is caused only by us, and we can fix it all by ourselves. Maybe he misspoke. Maybe the reporter got it wrong. Maybe he forgot about Communist China and India, and, like, the other continents."

It was unclear how much of the cost of the lunary program Gore would pocket through his Alliance for Climate Protection, the bipartisan group he leads, but the cost to the nation was estimated at up to $3 trillion dollars. Reports didn't make clear who would get the money, only that it would be spent, following standard editorial policy.

Reporters failed to ask what, if anything, the other 97% of the world's population would be doing, while the 3% who live here would end fossil fuel use and save the planet. The report included the mandatory lines about Gore winning the Nobel prize and an Oscar.

----------

9- Global Whining Disproof

The lamestream media told you:

Global warming nightmares are accumulating one after another, with appearances by Al Gore and top political leaders worldwide. Computer models prove we're nearly doomed unless America stops everything it does and you all get ready to abandon your lifestyle and freedoms to save the planet.

The Uninvited Ombudsman notes however that:

WASHINGTON -- Mathematical proof that there is no "climate crisis" appears today (7/15/08) in a major, peer-reviewed paper, "Physics and Society," a learned journal of the 10,000-member American Physical Society.

Christopher Monckton, who once advised Margaret Thatcher, demonstrates, using 30 equations, that computer models used by the UN's climate panel (IPCC) were pre-programmed with overstated values for the three variables whose product is "climate sensitivity" (temperature increase in response to greenhouse-gas increase), resulting in a 500-2000% overstatement of CO2's effect on temperature in the IPCC's latest climate assessment report, published in 2007.

Climate Sensitivity Reconsidered http://www.aps.org/units/fps/newsletters/200807/monckton.cfm demonstrates that later this century, a doubling of the concentration of CO2 compared with pre-industrial levels, will increase global mean surface temperature not by the 6 °F predicted by the IPCC but harmlessly, by little more than 1 °F.

The paper reveals the following:

• Not one of the three key variables whose product is climate sensitivity can be measured directly;
• The IPCC's values for these key variables are taken from only four published papers, not 2,500;
• "Global warming" halted ten years ago, and surface temperature has been falling for seven years;
• Not one of the computer models relied upon by the IPCC predicted so long and rapid a cooling;
• The IPCC inserted a table into the scientists' draft, overstating the effect of ice-melt by 1000%;
• Mars, Jupiter, Neptune's largest moon, and Pluto warmed at the same time as Earth warmed;
• In the past 70 years the Sun was more active than at almost any other time in the past 11,400 years.

Although the IPCC concluded in 2007 that anthropogenic CO2 emissions would cause rapid warming, global mean surface temperature has not risen since 1998 and graphs show it falling since late 2001. The present analysis suggests that the failure of the IPCC's models to predict this and many other climatic phenomena arises from defects in its evaluation of math factors beyond most people's ability to comprehend. If you want to see what climate models look like, and gaze at the incomprehensible (to me at least) math, click the link above.

Special Guest Columnist Craig Cantoni --
Destroy the economy... go to glamorous cocktail parties; Smoke dope at home... go to prison

What happens when our overlords in Congress, the White House and the Federal Reserve destroy the economy and ruin millions of lives? They get invited to cocktail parties and news shows, and are treated with respect and dignity by the public.

What happens when some poor schlemiel gets caught with several ounces of dope for his own use and hasn't harmed anyone? He goes to prison.

Have we lost all sense of proportionality and justice?

Sorry, but please allow me one more emotional outburst: What kind of mind control has taken place to keep Americans from thinking about throwing their overlords in prison?

That's not a facetious question. If you thought it was, then perhaps you don't know what the overlords have been doing to us for the last three decades to bring us close to economic collapse today. They have knowingly turned the country into a debtor nation, given average folks an incentive to spend more than they make, created the housing bubble and other bubbles, given us trillions of dollars of free stuff without any intention of paying the bill, debased the dollar and thus our standard of living, and covered their crimes with economic bunkum, populist hokum, and money borrowed from foreigners.

If you don't think that Alan Greenspan, Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, and John McCain should be wearing prison stripes and eating from metal plates instead of going to Washington cocktail parties, then you must want to empty prisons of all convicted burglars, because, collectively, burglars have done far less harm to society than Congress, the White House and the Fed.

Or perhaps you don't know the facts, which would be understandable, given that government K-12 schools and government-dependent universities don't educate students about the economic crimes of the government. Some of those students become reporters and pundits, who don't know enough about economics and economic history to tell their audiences about the crimes. However, in their defense they know a lot about A-Rod's affair with Madonna.

A day doesn't go by without someone sending an email to me about Big Oil, regurgitating some tripe he heard in the imbecilic media about Exxon Mobil's profits and oil speculators. The senders don't know that Exxon Mobil is a small player compared to the real Big Oil -- the state-owned oil companies around the world. Even more telling, the senders never say anything about Big Fanny. No, not their rear ends, where many of them keep their heads; but Fannie Mae, the voracious monster created by the government to give mortgages to people who shouldn't get mortgages.

Big Fanny has become a slush fund for political payoffs and cronyism. Its former CEO, who made $90 million a year, was fired for cooking the books; yet he became an advisor to Mr. Change, Barack Obama. More capital has gone through Big Fanny than cr*p through the fannies of every goose in the world. If the company runs out of capital, the government could be on the hook for $5 trillion.

Psst! Let me whisper a secret to you: The government is you.

Amazingly, Big Fanny is a small burglary ring compared to Big Congress and Big Fed, the members of which deserve to be sent to the Big House and have their fannies lusted after by their fellow inmates.

Yeah, I know: You're powerless to mete out justice and imprison them. But the least you can do is stop treating them with respect and start treating them like the Big Crooks and Big Arsses that they are.

An author and columnist, Mr. Cantoni can be reached at ccan2@aol.com.

Counterintuitive Man says:
"You can have my gun when you take it from my cold dead finger," is a total myth!

Spineless American whiners at a huge gun show recently were busy stocking up on mountains of ammo, buckets of magazines and reloading supplies, "for when Obama takes over," according to the Uninvited Ombudsman, who watched and heard their whines in between signing books for fans. Buy now or forever forgo your piece, eh?

Like during Katrina, when obedient slavish Americans meekly turned over their guns, handle -- not bullets -- first, to cooperative authorities, gun show buyers were preparing by stockpiling. The assumption was that authorities were preparing to take the guns from their warm live fingers with either a smile (we're from the government and we're here to save you) or with a tough gritty face, at gunpoint.

Not one gun owner fired one shot during the Katrina confiscations, to avoid "news" broadcasts that would have said, "Crazed maniac shoots at peaceful peace officers maintaining neighborhood safety after disaster, and is shot dead in a hail of police gunfire along with his entire family and dog; neighbors thank police for their brave efforts and propose statues; dead gunman may have had mental problems, motive is still unknown, police found 300 rounds of live assault ammunition in his flooded compound bunker; more news at six."

The revolution will not be televised. It will not be brought to you in three parts by any sponsor, and it will not feature guns taken from cold dead fingers.

Comments help keep me going. Alan.

As always this was a great read. Heath G.

Alan:
You have a way with words, most of the ''blame-street'' media types are all steamed up over the truth. Please don't stop, it's wonderful just watching them melt. Got to get you on The O'Reilly Factor, Rush or maybe ''Cal'' on NRA Radio. Bill M.
[For the record, I've been on FOX (but not O'Reilly yet), and Cal at NRA, both repeatedly, and Rush mentioned me once... let these good folks know if you agree with Bill, it might work! Alan.]

The Joe Horn Hero story attracted several knowledgable remarks, this from Texas State Rifle Assn.:

Alan,
On the Joe Horn case, it is interesting to note that, other than the Civil Immunity portion of Castle, the new law was inapplicable in this case. Texas' property defense rights were unchanged by Castle, only the portion dealing with defending one's own person.
Also, the entire shooting was witnessed by a plain clothes detective who was the first to respond to the scene. He was waiting for backup when Horn emerged from the house, and shoot both burglars.
It was a pretty nice piece of shooting. The perps scattered in two directions. He had to plug one, wheel 180 and get the other. Not bad shooting for a sixty something year old.
--Jim Dark

It'd be cool if you stayed on topic (guns) because I think healthcare is probably an interest of yours but you are far from an expert on the topic, making your opinions those of a layperson. Maybe put it in a separate blog. --Chris M.
[People do occassionally prefer I perform as a one-trick pony, but I steadfastly refuse. I'm reasonably expert in a handful of disciplines, and my credentials and ability to comment intelligently on virtually anything I select is right up there with people at The New York Times. Alan.]

As expected, DC resorted to the ploy that it is much easier for them to pass ignorant laws than for anyone to fight them. There needs to be a penalty for a governing body that disobeys the laws that supposedly govern them. --David M.

I've just read the DC v Heller decision and dissents. The logic (lack of it) on the part of Stevens is simply breathtaking. Apparently, the man never even heard of formal logic. Breyer, on the other hand, wants to let government interfere however it wants with civil rights. Since they, along with the other intellectual lightweights, Souter and Ginsburg, signed the two dissents, I conclude that our liberties are not safe while these four sit there in their arrogance. --Larry S.

If prostitutes can't have guns in DC, then that eliminates all politicians from owning them. Politicians are not exactly like prostitutes. Politicians screw us in different ways and don't get our money voluntarily. However, they are similar in that you definitely want to take a shower after visiting one. --Dave D.

Alan, a cornucopia of info as usual! Re: the 195 folks who ended criminal careers, I've been looking for gang-on-gang killings (what some un-PC cops call The Good Riddance Factor.) If I find anything I'll let you know, and vice-versa please. --Barrett T.

Re: The 195 heros (justifiable homicides): at $1 million per life saved this is almost real money --Charles W.

I'm a big fan of the Page 9 emails. Being in NY State puts me on the frontlines of the battle that the politicians are waging against our rights. Bloomberg is after "illegal" guns, but he's made it no secret he wants to make all guns illegal. --Anon

Smoking is obviously bad for you, but saves money for the welfare state by killing you off sooner. --Jane O.

We only hope that you know how much your efforts on our behalf are appreciated. Thanks! --Richard M.
